From a geopolitical perspective, Qeshm Island is located in the Strait of Hormuz, a naval transit route where over 15,000 ships go by yearly and where over 40% of the global oil passes through. Furthermore, Qeshm Island is located centrally on the North South trade corridor, which spans 2800 kilometers, one of the major transit routes for goods traveling along the East West trade corridor, giving access to landlocked central Asian countries. It is estimated that by 2020, close to 3 trillion USD will transit via this route, traveling from Asia to Europe. Moreover, the goods traveling the same route via the airways make Qeshm Island an ideal location as an aerial cargo hub, where aircraft overhaul can take place.
Qeshm’s close proximity to deep sea waters is also suitable for docking of cargo ships in excess of 100,000 tons. Qeshm is also an ideal location for naval shipyards where overhaul and new construction of large tonnage ships can take place. Qeshm’s location, close to the mainland creates synergies with the ports located close by, specifically Bandar Abbas, with its Shahid Bahonar and Shahid Rajai jetties. Finally, with a large labor force and access to highly qualified personnel from the mainland at competitive wages, Qeshm is an ideal location for a variety of small and large scale industrial projects.
